She began her education at Mills College from 1942-44. Carmichael received her BFA from the University of Southern California in 1951, as well as her PhD in art history and cinematography in 1972. Between these years she studied at Claremont Graduate School, receiving her MFA in 1955. Carmichael studied art with Francis de Erdely, Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, Dong Kingman, and William Gaw.
In addition to her watercolors, she has produced sculpture, murals, oil paintings and independent films. Carmichael taught as an instructor of drawing and painting at the Palos Verdes Arts Asn, art history and cinematography at the Otis Art Institute and the University of Southern California. Carmichael was a member of the American Watercolor Society, a director of the California Watercolor Society and the Pasadena School of Fine Arts, as well as the founding director of the Pacificult Asian Museum. She was also the director of the Wooden Horse Gallery in Laguna Beach from 1962-66. Carmichael died in Pasadena on November 5, 2005.Carmichael's work has been featured in many impressive solo and group exhibitions worldwide, and can be found in permanent collections throughout the country. She staged more than 200 solo exhibitions in galleries in Los Angeles, Japan, and Europe and has works included in permanent collections of the Oakland Museum of California, the Long Beach Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. Her 1976 film Heritage of Hope was nominated for an Emmy, and she initiated the Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum's installation of computer chips called Memory Medallions in a few dozen historic tombstones, allowing visitors with a laptop or hand-held computer to view 5-min silent films about such luminaries as CalTech physicist Richard Feynman and 1950s actor George Reeves.
