This is a beautiful and RARE Antique California Plein Air Impressionist Nautical Oil Painting on canvas, by important early California painter, Jae Carmichael 1925 - 2005. This work is an early example by her, and highly unusual for the fact that it is an oil painting. Carmichael is well known for her watercolor paintings, so an artwork like this is much scarcer. This painting depicts a Los Angeles nautical seascape dockyard scene, with a lone docked sailboat, floating above turquoise waters, with small dock houses to the right of the boat. This work is not signed on the front, but is is hand signed: "Jae Carmichael 9/3/45" on the verso of the canvas, in the artist's unusual handwriting. Good condition please see photos. Frame has edge wear, with missing paint and wood ornamentation along the edges. Approximately 18 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 12 x 16 inches. Please check my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! Jae Carmichael was born in Hollywood, California in 1925.

She began her education at Mills College from 1942-44. Carmichael received her BFA from the University of Southern California in 1951, as well as her PhD in art history and cinematography in 1972. Between these years she studied at Claremont Graduate School, receiving her MFA in 1955. Carmichael studied art with Francis de Erdely, Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, Dong Kingman, and William Gaw.

In addition to her watercolors, she has produced sculpture, murals, oil paintings and independent films. Carmichael taught as an instructor of drawing and painting at the Palos Verdes Arts Asn, art history and cinematography at the Otis Art Institute and the University of Southern California. Carmichael was a member of the American Watercolor Society, a director of the California Watercolor Society and the Pasadena School of Fine Arts, as well as the founding director of the Pacificult Asian Museum. She was also the director of the Wooden Horse Gallery in Laguna Beach from 1962-66. Carmichael died in Pasadena on November 5, 2005.

Carmichael's work has been featured in many impressive solo and group exhibitions worldwide, and can be found in permanent collections throughout the country. Was nominated for an Emmy. Jae Carmichael, painter, sculptor, photographer, writer, and independent filmmaker updated a 19th century cemetery and was founding director of Pasadena's Pacific Asia Museum.

She staged more than 200 solo exhibitions in galleries in Los Angeles, Japan, and Europe and has works included in permanent collections of the Oakland Museum of California, the Long Beach Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. Her 1976 film Heritage of Hope was nominated for an Emmy, and she initiated the Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum's installation of computer chips called Memory Medallions in a few dozen historic tombstones, allowing visitors with a laptop or hand-held computer to view 5-min silent films about such luminaries as CalTech physicist Richard Feynman and 1950s actor George Reeves.
