Maine Impasto Oil painting, Lock Dam Spillway, Allagash Wilderness Waterway

"Lock Dam Spillway, Allagash Wildernes Waterway, Maine". Michael Says, This beautiful impasto (Thick) oil painting on a gypsum (traditional chalk gessoed) basswood wood cradled panel, was captured during my visiting artist residency in 2020. I was the inaugural Allagash Wilderness Waterway artist chosen by the park to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Allagash being set aside as a natural wild river of America. I painted 50 paintings to honor each year, of which this is one, including 25 oils and 25 watercolors, during my two week stay.

I stayed at Lock Dam Cabin on the North end of Chamberlain Lake. Where the well known author Dorothy Boone Kidney and her husband Milford stayed managing the Lock Dam waterway system, that connects Chamberlain Lake to Eagle Lake via Martin Stream. "Dot" to those who knew her, wrote three books about their one-room cabin experiences called, "Away From It All", "A Home In the Wilderness" and Wilderness Journal. I highly recommend reading these books before your adventure in the Allagash Wilderness.

In two paintings Vermette presents the view of Bear Mountain From Philsbury Island where Henry David Thoreau camped during his 1857 trip from Moosehead Lake to the Allagash accompanied by Joe Polis, a Penobscot guide. " I began to be exhilarated by the sight of the wild fir and spruce tops, " Thoreau wrote in his journal: it was like the sight and odor of cake to a schoolboy.

To Vermette The natural world is cake-and celebration. He provides us with an exaltation of paint and place. We partake of his art and his Allagash-with pleasure. Carl Little --edited his brother David's book, "ART OF KATAHDIN", which features several of Vermette paintings. He lives and writes on Mount Desert Island. Michael has been painting in watercolor and oil for over 50 years in plein air on the Maine coastal and Landscape scene. He graduated from Maine College of Art with a BFA degree in painting, is a certified Maine Art Educator for 36 years, and is represented by the Gleason Gallery in Boothbay, The Frame and Art Gallery in Falmouth, and the Lupine Gallery on Monhegan Island, all in Maine. He has won numerous awards through several Maine Open Juried shows and he is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society where his northern landscape and coastal watercolors have delighted several galleries in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

He has been awarded two artist residencies in Acadia National Park, Monhegan Island, Baxter State Park, Crawford Notch in New Hampshire, and most recently the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in Northern Maine. He has recently written and published a new book called. " 50 Plus One : Allagash Wilderness Waterway Inaugural Visiting Artist 2020". This painting is quality all the way. Michael only uses pure oil pigments from Williamsburg, Blocks, and Old Holland.

He also uses his own traditional Black Oil Wax medium that he makes himself and is in itself a very archival medium that brightens the paint and increases its viscosity. He paints on a traditional gypsum birch, oak or basswood panel (an alabaster stone coated wood panel) as the masters would declare, The most highly prized surface to paint oils on. This painting is framed in a gold leaf and black lacquer plein air frame. This item is in the category "Art\Paintings".
