Herbert Bohnert Original Painting of President Dwight D. Eisenhower Circa 1955
Herbert Bohnert Original Painting of President Dwight D. I have included a photograph of a letter that the estate showed me, to demonstrate that there was some kind of a relationship between the artist and President Eisenhower. It is possible that Bohnert was considered to be one of Eisenhower's official portrait artists, but I could not find any specific information about this. He went to New York to study at the Art Students League, beginning his career doing illustrations for several magazine covers, among them, Harper's, Collier's, The Metropolitan, and The Munsey.

Like his contemporary Norman Rockwell, Bohnert's illustrational style was naturalistic and attentive to the nuances of facial expression, costume and setting to convey character. Bohnert was the official poster creator for US Government War Bonds for Father's Day, June, 1944. Today there is an annual prize that bears the name "Herbert and Rosetta (his wife) Memorial Award". There's a letter from President Dwight Eisenhower that establishes that Bohnert was honored at the Hudson Valley Art Association.

(I have a copy of the letter). He continued a very successful career as an advertising illustrator in New York City. His work is featured at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Museum, Washington, D. Cleveland Museum of Art, South Carolina State Museum, Texas State University Museum, New Britain Museum of American Art, among others. Society of Illustrators, the Salmagundi Club, the Artists Guild NY, the Cleveland Society of Art, Allied Artists of America, Hudson Valley Art Association, Yonkers Art Association, Cleveland Art Club, National Arts Club (Chairman, Exhibition Committee), Allied Artists of America, American Artists Professional League (National Board), Director of the Hudson Valley Art Association (Gold Medal, 1961), the Council of American Art Societies (Director), and the Council of American Art Societies.

Annual Art Directors Club New York, publication 1945. Annual of Art Directors Club of NY 1944, publication and reproduction from the National Exhibition of Advertising Art Show, Rockefeller Center Galleries, May 15-June 3.
